10: I heard that Sulli is the funny one?

Sulli: Me? (laugh) I kind of am. I’m not good at making others laugh when I’m asked to but I’m kind of funny when I’m with my group.
Luna: In a weird way too. For example, when she’s drinking water, she’ll make a joke about the water. And she doesn’t mean to be funny, she just says it, but we laugh because it sounds funny. I don’t know how to explain it… She’s the type who just talks in a funny way.
Sulli: I’m… a bit.. slow. My actions and words, hm… how do I say it?
Luna: She’s a bit of a slow thinker too. (laugh)
Sulli: I don’t like complicated things so I just blurt out what I think but people find it funny.

10: So that’s why Heechul [of Super Junior] said he’d make you into a variety show character. (laugh)

Sulli: (laugh) Heechul. But he never really tells me how I should act on variety shows. (laugh) He just roots for me and tells me on radio shows. (laugh)

10: I saw that Heechul put his sunglasses on you on “Music Bank” last week. And you went on their encore stage too.

Sulli: First of all, I really wanted his sunglasses. I would like to wear sunglasses too but it’s unlikely to happen because I’m in a female idol group. (laugh) So I stood next to him and told him I want to try it on, and that’s why he gave them to me. That moment I pretended to have become possessed with him and imitated him. (laugh)

——————irrelevant parts omitted——————

10: Well you have that charm about you but you also shot a spread for wedding dresses, right? I was reminded that you are someone who can pull off such photos. (laugh)

Victoria: It was great. I think it suits me the best. In terms of the age too. (laugh) It’s something that all women wear when they get married. So it felt really nice wearing one.
Sulli: I wore one once too. (laugh) It really felt like I was getting married. The concept was that I would be marrying Siwon [of Super Junior] and he said, “You should feel honored that the first guy you get to marry is me. (laugh) But it felt so good because it really felt like I was getting married. And I became curious whether I would feel like this when I actually do get married.

——————irrelevant parts omitted——————

“Do you want to get a taste of this song?”

Super Junior KyuHyun, with drama “Pasta” OST

It’s interview to be glad of. Super Junior’s maknae of 13 members, KyuHyun.

The fans who missed him can now get time to listen to his voice more. As he can sing with his sweet voice, he makes people anticipate for future as he waits for his turn to shine to show off his talent.

The year of 2010, he came to us with MBC drama “Pasta” OST “Listen..To You”. Melted into the delicious drama “Pasta”, Super Junior KyuHyun’s attracting song pulls hungry ears to the table.

BUGS: Hello. I think Bugs family will be glad to hear from you. Please introduce yourself first.

KYUHYUN: Hello, I’m Super Junior’s KyuHyun. Bugs was one of my favourites since high school, so I’m really thankful that I can introduce myself through Bugs.

BUGS: At the end of last year, Super Junior won the DaeSang at GolenDisk. I know it’s late, but congratulations. How did you feel?

KYUHYUN: That was the first time we’ve won DaeSang at Golden Disk. Since GD was a award with history and so many of wonderful sunbae singers have won awards from there. It just felt like it was all a dream. I couldn’t sleep that night.

BUGS: What did the members talk about after getting the award?

KYUHYUN: We said “Yes~ We’re now DaeSang singers!” and were really happy. (smiles) We also made our mind to do better in the future.

BUGS: Because there is a lot of members in Super Junior, you probably missed the speech after. Do you have something you wanted to say?

KYUHYUN: Since I’m the maknae of Super Junior, I knew I wouldn’t be able to say anything after the award, so I didn’t really prepare any speech… I won’t say anything. (smiles) Our leader LeeTeuk hyung said everything there was to say. In hopes of being able to have the chance to say the DaeSang speech, I’ll save it for now.

BUGS: After finishing off 2009, you came back to fans with drama “Pasta” OST “Listen.. To You”. Do you watch “Pasta” by any chance?

KYUHYUN: Yes, I watch the drama. Edward Kyun (Lee SunKyun). It was impressive.

BUGS: The drama is about cooking. Are you good at cooking KyuHyun?

KYUHYUN: Between our members, I’m well known as “Han River Ramen.” It’s because when I first came to live at the SJ dorm, I had to make the ramen since I’m the maknae, but I had some trouble determining the amount of water. After that, members don’t ask me to cook ramen. There’s another story. I wanted some ham, so I asked RyeoWook who is a good cook, for way to cook ham. He told me to cook it with oil, and I thought he meant sesame oil. And of course, after that, the members don’t ask me to cook. (smiles) + But above all, what is the food you’re most good at? I make good BiBimMyun. Haha. (BiBimMyun~spicy noodle with assorted vegetables)

BUGS: Then now I’ll ask you some questions about music. Please tell us how you got to sing “Pasta” OST “Listen..To You”

KYUHYUN: I got to sing it because there was a request for me, thankfully and I was more than happy to do so. At first I only knew it as OST of some drama, but later I realized it was OST of “Pasta” and also my song will be played a lot in the drama. So I was expecting a lot, and started to get nervous when I was recording. The melody itself is so sweet, but then the lyrics were a little embarrassing. The composer told me to sing it like I’m whispering to a girl’s ears, as sweet as possible. I tried my best to do it like that, but I don’t know if it worked.

BUGS: These days even competition between OSTs are fierce. What do you think are the charms of OSTs?

KYUHYUN: There are definitely charms in OSTs. When you just hear to song itself, you might not be interested in it, but when you hear it through a movie or a drama, it brings out better effect on the listeners, I think. I even have a separate playlist for my favourite OSTs that I listen to. In these ways, I think the charms of OSTs are more than enough. + Any drama you’re interested in these days? It’s Pasta. Haha.

BUGS: Can we expect to see you on stage singing “Listen..To You”?

KYUHYUN: If a lot of people love the song, then I should tell my company about it. I could say “People really love the song, so I want to be on stage singing it!” but I don’t think it’s that popular. I don’t have any specific plans, but if there is a chance, then I’ll try to do my best.

BUGS: When the song came out, what did the Super Junior members say?

KYUHYUN: Surprisingly and thankfully they called me even though I hadn’t said anything about it. They said “the song sounds good” or “it’s not bad at all!”, cheering me on with positive attitudes.

BUGS: Who was the most supportive of all?

KYUHYUN: Every member supported me. No one really was the most supportive, but ShinDong hyung was the first to respond to the song and cheered me on for it. He called me to tell me the song’s really good.

BUGS: You also participated on Yoo YoungSuk’s 20th anniversary album, singing “7 Years of Love”. There has been a review that said it revealed your singing ability. How did you come to participate?

KYUHYUN: I wasn’t going to say this, but I’m telling you because you’re Bugs. (smiles) Yoo YoungSuk sunbaenim said he worried about working with an idol singer. But he gave us a song called “Shining Star” for our Super Junior’s third album. When we were working on it, he really praised me a lot, maybe too much so that it got bit weird. When I sang, he would say “You’re a genius! Where have you been hiding all my life?” (^^) And then he told me that I should work with him again because he wants to compose me a song later on. Coincidentally right after, his 20th anniversary album came out, so I got to sing “7 Years of Love”.

BUGS: Was there anything hard working with Yoo YoungSuk?

KYUHYUN: Sunbaenim has such a young mind, and he tries to communicate with us about so many things, so he actually adjusted to me. If I asked him to “make this like that?” then he would mostly accept saying “Oh~ yes, sure!” If I asked him for something, he advised me on lots of things. So It’s was very meaningful and good time.

BUGS: Some times ago, we did an interview with Yoo YoungSuk. He really sad good things about you, what you think about it?

KYUHYUN: Hahaha. It really feels weird. I’m not used to such praises. But at the same time, it feels really good as he was one of the singers I looked up on.

BUGS: Then you must have some connection with Yoo YoungSuk.

KYUHYUN: I think I do. I just hope he’s thinking the same thing.

BUGS: For songs like “7 Years of Love” where you have to express your feelings, where do you get the emotions from?

KYUHYUN: I’ve never loved anyone for 7 years, so it was hard at first. In other interview, I told them that we stopped recording because I couldn’t focus on a part. The lyrics were a bit hard to understand, and I just couldn’t get the feeling in the lyrics. So I asked YYS why the lyrics were the way it is, and he explained it to me really nicely for about 10 minutes. After hearing his explanation and imagining, I could focus on the lyrics. I think it was a really good experience.

BUGS: Do you feel any difference between singing in a group and singing by yourself?

KYUHYUN: There’s bit of pressure. Of course there’s always pressure when recording SJ albums, but at least I can share with other members. And I don’t have a lot of experience in recording by myself, and since I was the one who had to deliver the message to the listeners, it was a little bit pressuring. (What would be the good thing about it?) 좋Well the good thing is that my voice is constantly heard (smiles).

BUGS: When listening to your voice, there is something different than other SJ members. Is there any song you want to sing by yourself out of the SJ songs?

KYUHYUN: Yes, I have a few. In the 2nd album, Yoon JongShin sunbae gave us a song called “Disco Drive”. I liked this song the first time I heard it. And I also really like the song “Shining Star”. We sing it on Super Show. If there is a chance, I want to sing these two songs by myself, and I do sing these often when I go to Karaoke.

BUGS: Is there any plan for you to publish solo albums?

KYUHYUN: I would be lying if I said I don’t have any, but for right now, I want to focus on team activities. And if a chance come along, then I’ll do my best. I did my best for “Pasta” OST as I knew this could be a chance. But I don’t have any plans for solo activities. Team activities come before it for now.

BUGS: You are musically talented, what kind of music do you want to do from now on?

KYUHYUN: The music I used to listen are all in the ballad genre, so if I do have to desire for my “own” music, then I want to focus on ballads even though I’m a dance singer. So for now I want to be able to show off the team colors. After, if I get a chance, I want to try some ballad music. If I become a solo artist, I probably won’t be singing a dance music. (smiles)

BUGS: What is your favourite music these days?

KYUHYUN: Oh, these days I’m listening to Brown Eyed Soul’s ‘Lord in Storm”

BUGS: Is there any singer you set as a role model?

KYUHYUN: I really like Sung SiKyung and Kim DongRyul sunbaenim. Actually there are a lot of respectable singers, but if I have to list, then I would like to be these two. I like all the songs from them.

BUGS: Is there any other parts of entertainment sector you want to try, like acting, variety, or MC.. or even studying more?

KYUHYUN: I don’t want to study anymore (smiles). Um,other members are very active in different parts of entertainment sector, but I’m not sure of which part I should head into. I’m bit greedy, so I do have interest in different parts of the entertainment sector… + Wouldn’t you know better if you thought about which programme you most want to be on along with the other members’ shows? Oh, I really like watching “Strong Heart”. When watching LT, EH, and SD hyungs, I think they’re really funny. Even though I can’t be as funny as they are, but I want to be on those shows at least once a year. Also, seeing other members act, I also wanted to try out acting. But I think that’s for later on, because right now, I want to be recognized for my music first.

BUGS: If you get to sing a duet, who would you sing it with?

KYUHYUN: Do I have to pick between idol singers? + That would be more fun^^ It’s not because we’re from a same company, gut I’d like to sing a duet with TaeYeon or Jessica of Girls Generation. Both of them are good singers. But the company’s not giving me the chance. Haha

KYUHYUN: I also want to know when that is. But I don’t think it’s going to be that long. We’ll be back better than before for sure.

BUGS: How do you want people to remember you musically?

KYUHYUN: I hope they will remember me as someone who really loves singing, his fans, and music.

BUGS: Thank you for the interview, and I hope “Listen..To You” gets a good response from the fans. We’ll finish up with future plans.

KYUHYUN: Yes, well this interview was about “Pasta” OST. I hope that in the future, more of OST composers will look for me (smiles). Super Junior will come back with new album, so our fans please wait until then by listening to my song “Listen..To You”, watching LT, EH, and SD in variety shows, and HC, SW, and KB in acting. I’ll comeback with other members. Thank you.

Whenever the idol group Super Junior is mentioned, the modifier “Yeneung-dol” (idol group members who are showing superior talent on entertainment programs) always follows. Every member of Super Junior is actively participating in various entertainment programs, TV dramas, and musicals, but, at the same time, they have been failing to push their image as singers.

But, surprisingly, their third album entitled “Sorry, Sorry” sold more than 250,000 copies last year, and they ranked atop the album sales. In addition, their fourth album entitled “Bonamana,” which was released recently, also sold 200,000 copies for the first order, and the total number of sales for only one week exceeded 100,000 copies.

Super Junior is differentiated from other idol groups who release mini album and are earning profits from the digital music market. In a recent interview with members of Super Junior, nine members out of thirteen members came out for the interview held in Apgujeong-dong.

One member, Kang In, had been caught in a crackdown on drunk drivers last year, and now he is planning to join the army, and Chinese member Han Kyung is now involved in a lawsuit with his agency SM Entertainment regarding his exclusive contract. Another member, Ki Bum, could not participate in the fourth album due to his busy acting activities. Also, Choi Si Won could not come to the interview as he had to receive medical surgery to remove an infection on his salivary gland.

As there are so many members in Super Junior, they could not have peaceful days last year, and had to go through hard times due to many unfavorable factors and rumors. During the interview, they talked about their feelings for what happened so far and they also said their ambition is to continue their activities until they reach their forties or fifties and host the “Super Junior Show” someday.

Followings are questions and answers with members of Super Junior.
Interviewer: You must have gone through significant distress due to some members’ personal problems.

▲ Lee Teuk: It was hard for me when I had to smile even in a difficult situation when showing up for entertainment programs. In particular, I was shocked when I found out that Han Kyung has gone through a lawsuit. But, since we left his seat empty, I want him back all the time. Kang In is burning to participate in our activities these days, and he always gives us advice after monitoring our performances. I will do my best to keep “Super Junior” together until every member can join again.

▲ Hee Chul: I was in a state of panic when my best friend Han Kyung left for China. I almost thought of withdrawing from the group because I was so depressed. I started getting more famous when I started acting, not as a member of Super Junior, and I was not as good at singing like some other members such as Ye Sung, Kyu Hyun, and Ryeo Wook, and not as good at dancing like other members such as Dong Hae and Eun Hyuk. But, members with whom I used to fight have stood by me and helped me in many ways. Only the fact that they are together with me suddenly became a great help and source of appreciation for me. In particular, Eun Hyuk helped me to change my mind. Thanks to him, I was tempted to do activities for our new album for the first time. I want to go back to the time when we released our first album and want to put forth my best efforts for activities.

Interviewer: Despite many unfavorable factors, your album sales, especially the sales of your third and fourth albums, are outstanding. Does it mean that the number of your fans has increased?

▲ Lee Teuk: I was surprised that people are buying our fourth album as well. There are good things and bad things when we appear on entertainment programs. We may lose our image as singers, but at the same, I think that we can advertise ourselves to the public. Also, besides us, many other entertainers have sung “Sorry, Sorry” on many programs.

▲ Hee Chul: When idol members show up on entertainment programs, it is easier for them to target teenage fans, but usually older viewers seem to like them. I think that appearing on an entertainment program is like a double-edged sword.Interviewer: The title song of the fourth album, “Bonamama” sounds very similar to your previous hit song “Sorry, Sorry.” Do you think that a certain style of the music has emerged for Super Junior?

▲ Lee Teuk: When we listened to the song for the first time, we also thought that the song is very similar to “Sorry, Sorry.” It is natural that people begin to compare those two songs. We put the name of “SJ (Super Junior) Funky” for songs which combine dance and electronic sounds, and reminds people of Super Junior. I also gave it a five star evaluation on the music website.

Interviewer: But, except the title song, I could find many simple melody songs which require outstanding singing ability.

▲ Lee Teuk: In 2007, when the Super Junior unit “Super Junior K.R.Y.” planned to release an album, Kyu Hyun had a car accident, so many good songs could not be included in the album at that time. And actually those good songs have come together with this new album. So, the portion of songs that require singing ability has been increased. For example, when I listened to the youngest member Ryeo Wook’s solo song entitled “Spring Day” repeatedly while I was driving, I almost felt like crying.

Interviewer: Do you think that you have more interest in music compared to the past, as you have already released four albums?

▲ Lee Teuk: In debut, we just focused on recording songs. But, these days, we tend to present our opinions, saying, “What if we try this part this way?” when we arrange songs. In our previous album, Ryeo Wook’s own song was included, and for the repackaged album of the fourth album, which will be released soon, more songs that were made by other members will be included. I think it is time for our members to show off our talent in music.
Interviewer: Usually, the life expectancy of an idol group is regarded to range from three to five years. As Super Junior debuted in 2005, does it mean that Super Junior has already reached its lifespan?

▲ Lee Teuk: You are totally right. I can imagine that people might look at us with the same viewpoint with which I looked at senior star singers such as H.O.T. and Shin Hwa, who already released their fourth and fifth albums when I was an aspiring singer. Sometimes, I think, “Do we have to stop performing as Super Junior?” But, these days, we perform not only in Korea, but also in other Asian countries, so only four or five years are not enough. We became popular after significant time had passed, so I think that it means that we can last longer.

▲ Hee Chul: I and Lee Teuk are 28 years old now. I know there are many cute and fresh junior singers. But, I want to stress our longevity as we appear on various broadcasting, and at the same, I want to hold many performances whenever we release a new album. I like to perform on the stage because it is very exciting.

Interviewer: How do you think people regard idol groups?

▲ Lee Teuk: I think that it is somewhat exaggerated. People say that the industries of advertisement, drama, and music have been conquered by idols, but actually there are not many programs with more than ten percent viewer ratings among programs in which idols appear. “Idol” means a target of admiration. Actually, many senior doyenne singers such as Cho Yong Phil, Na Hoon A, the group Fire Truck, Park Nam Jeong, and Seo Taiji and Boys used to be idols in their times. As time goes by, people just tend to remember that they were not idols. During any time, there were idols that people admire. The word “idol” is just much more focused and stands out more than before these days. As a member of an idol group, I feel sorry that people do not have an interest in the music, but rather in other additional factors, of idols.

▲ Hee Chul: We wanted to break away from the image of idol groups in entertainment programs. When Shin Dong attaches a fake mustache and dresses himself up comically, he does not look like an idol group member, and moreover I am proud of him. Whenever Lee Teuk, Eun Hyuk, and Shin Dong come on SBS TV’s “Strong Heart,” they brainstorm for ideas like comedians do. But, sometimes I feel bad when I find out that people regard us as washed-up entertainers and criticize us rather than cheering for our efforts on the stage as singers and on the entertainment programs.

Interviewer: At this moment, when you released your fourth album, is it the time that you are trying to free yourself from idol groups?

▲ Lee Teuk: When we debuted, we wanted to abandon the title of idol group. But, we have come this far as the idol group Super Junior, so I do not want to lose the idol title. Rather, I want to keep this title until we reach our forties and fifties and become senior star singers for a long time. As we have thirteen members, if only one member stands out per year, we can last for thirteen years. But, only less than half the members have become popular and have stood out until now. As we were recorded as having the largest number of members when we debuted, we want to break new records in the Korean music industry.

▲ Yea Sung: There are also cultural differences. In the case of Japan, star groups such as SMAP and Arashi, who debuted a long time ago, are still gaining huge popularity. We want to be loved by people like those groups for such a long time for the first time in Korea. Even after we reach our thirties, we want to continue to release albums and have performances. As we see that our members become more acknowledged in various fields and our album sales are increasing, we might already have passed the limit as an idol group little by little as we approach our future goal.

▲ Hee Chul: We want to make the “Super Junior Show,” which enables us to communicate with people, like the program “SMAPxSMAP,” which SMAP has been hosting in Japan.

Interviewer: Shin Dong has become a hot topic, as he proposed to his girlfriend using codes on the album jacket of the fourth album.

▲ Shin Dong: I was surprised to see that fans had broken the codes so fast. I was wrong because I should not have put my personal messages on the album which was originally made for our fans. I am really sorry to the other members and our fans.

▲ Hee Chul: I am sorry to our fans, but I think that he was very brave as a man. But, actually it was a shocking message for me, too. I did not even know that the message was so strong like that. [Marry me. I am proposing to you.]

Interviewer: How do you evaluate Choi Si Won’s acting, who just finished the drama “Oh! My Lady?”

▲ Lee Teuk: His acting, especially his facial expressions, were much better than when he appeared in the movie “Battle of Wits.” He has shown playful looks that he used to show us. When I looked at his acting when he drunkenly kissed a girl in the drama while he left the door of the refrigerator wide open, he looked so greasy.

-Everyday afternoon 8PM~2AM KBS, MBC, SBS 3 radio broadcasting all being taken over -

[E-Daily SPN Yang SeungJoon Reporter] ‘Super Junior’s Radio Heaven’

Everyday afternoon from 8PM to 2AM the next day, the three ground wave radio broadcasting systems are Super Junior’s. After Kim HeeChul starts off his SBS “KHC’s Young Street” from 8PM to 10PM, LeeTeuk and EunHyuk take the baton to whisper with their listeners of KBS 2FM “Super Junior’s Kiss The Radio”. The last runner is ShinDong. He finishes off the day, full of energy(?) from the dead silence of midnight to the next day morning with his “ShinDong, Kim ShinYoung’s ShimShimTaPa”.

They do have a meaningful record. LT,EH have the longest record for idol DJs to have survived, with 3 years and 8months of time. They survived the 2010 KBS spring reorganization, so their record goes on.

For idols who always have to pursuit a new style, Super Junior doesn’t let radio go even though radio is considered to be an “old media source”. We’ve listened to the philosophy of Super Junior member’s reason for following the “the path other idols groups do not go to” and their joy and sorrow after their debut of 2005.

What do you think is the charm of radio?

▲LT: For TVs, people call it as “stupid box” as we tend to just laugh absent mindedly at it. On the other hand, I think radio is where the listeners can relate to either the DJ or the listeners stories, agree or disagree with it. I think it gives the listeners a chance to take part with the radio. If TV just delivers news, radio is where the mutual understanding happens.

▲SD: There’s not much difference but radio is where the communication between listeners and DJ is important. Sometimes it’s good that reaction comes along really fast. Also you learn a lot through DJing.

Why do you think Super Junior members are more “seen” as DJs compared to other idol members?

▲ LT: I think it’s because most of the members started off in variety shows and their “images” are fun and talkative. The broadcasting systems tend to prefer talented members.

▲EH: Radio’s charm is that it’s truthful. You can even listen to the breathing sound if you crack the volume up. I think it’s because compared to other idol group members, Super Junior members showed their true image ever since we made our debut. I think that appealed more.

But then there are a lot of prejudice against idol DJs. As they are not as experienced in life, they don’t treat the listeners’ letters from heart, but just answer like an “answer sheet”. Did you ever get these kind of looks? If you have, how did you overcome it?

▲ LT: We do get pointed out for those while advising someone, as idol singers lack life experiences. So I try a lot to read more books and do research so I can improve on it. I think the most important thing is having the mindset of “there are things I don’t know about, so I should do something to fix it.”

▲ LT·EH’s KBS 2FM ‘Super Junior’s Kiss The Rado’, HC’s SBS ‘KHC’s Young Street’, and SD·KSY’s MBC Standard FM ‘SD·KSY’s ShimShimTaPa’

‘Super Junior’s Kiss The Radio’ is the longest program by idols members. What’s the key to the secret?

▲LT: I think it was possible because there was two of us. For example, if EH gets Swine Flu, then I try to do better, and when I’m sick with my back problems, then EH supports me.

At least 5 days are live broadcasting for radio programs. Also as four members’ time are from 8PM to 2AM, the time where young people would enjoy their lives the most, I think there must have been times where you didn’t want to do it.

▲SD: To tell you the truth, I do think I drifted apart from my friends a little bit while doing the radio. 2AM in the morning is when all the friends go back home after a tired night, but I think others are better off as they do it until the midnight. Sometimes I make my friends visit me at the studio. (smiles)

There must have been times where you wanted to quit.

▲LT: All the Sunbae radio DJs, including Danny (of g.o.d.) told me that 2 years is the turning point, and when we did reach 2 years I wanted to quit. It was so tiring and the idea of DJing very day was a pressure. Sometimes variety shows drag past midnight, and when you have radio, you are restricted from it. Sometimes doing radio programs felt like a burden, but now as we are passing three years, it feels like our playground.

▲HC: When you DJ alone, it’s hard while you are sick with cold or general fatigue. When you cough, it could make the listeners very irritated, but then it’s weird to say “I’m sorry” after the cough. If you don’t say anything for even three seconds, it’s NG in radio, but I do suffer from physiologic happenings. So when I have to cough, I think to myself “should I laugh and then just cough it off?” There are may difficulties as I have to count these in whild doing a radio. But then when the stories from listeners are sad, I can’t laugh it off, so it’s hard.

These days, radios usually have double DJs. For HC, he’s on his own. So is there anyone you want to DJ with?

▲ HC: It would be Trax’s member Jay. The reasons is that we are indeed close with each other, but in my case I don’t “finish” things up, so I need someone to hold me on. As I have high will-power, I don’t listen to others’ but Jay and Super Junior Donghae can control me. There’s also SNSD’s Jessica.

When is the hardest part while doing radio?

▲SD: It’s been really hard ever since Kim ShinYoung noona resigned. At first I thought it was going to be hard as our characters match and the chemistry wouldn’t be good, but as we broadcasted together, we realized that we have a really good chemistry. So I’m little bit worried about having a new partner. (a new DJ for KSY hasn’t been decided yet)

▲EH: Celebrities need time to improve themselves, so it’s really hard when I feel that I don’t have that time to improve. Like now how we’re getting ready for Super Junior’s album and we have radio everyday, so sometimes it’s worrying when I don’t have enough time to practice dance and other things.

In HC’s case, the same time (8PM to 10PM) is when the same entertainment hoobae TaeYeon has her radio program as well. Are you ever pressured?

▲HC: There is nothing like that. I don’t know how you’ll take this in, but I don’t care about rivals when I do drama or any other filming. I believe that the most important thing is for me to have most fun with freedom. If I keep minding other person I can screw myself up. I’m a person who believe I’m more important than the others; If you try hard, you’ll get back what you did, where you are killing yourself when it’s you who don’t try hard enough.

You guys must monitor each other’s programs. What would you say about each other’s leading skills?

▲LT: In HC’s case, his has more ”open” feeling. I think it’s easier for young people to listen to.

▲SD: The fact that HC’s not afraid in front of camera is a good thing. Even though it’s radio, it sometimes feels like a TV when you see it through Bora. For LT hyung and EH, they can talk really well. They make the guests shine. Those are something I admire.

▲EH: For SD hyung, his energy goes well with KSY’s energy. They break the prejudice that radio programs at midnight have to be quiet. When listening to their radio, it make me be in good mood.

▲HC: In case of ‘Sukira’ I’m jealous because LT and EH has things I don’t have. They wrap things up well without having mood swings. They calmly lead the program whereas I’m not as stable as them as I laugh out loud on my own when it’s funny and become really depressed when it’s sad. So I think ‘I can be the best guest, but I can’t be the best MC.’ But for LT’s case, he has a potential to become the best MC. For SD, he makes the guests feel like they’re at home. He has good adlibs on guests’ words and listener’s stories.

In MBC’s case they change the DJs around once a year. What’s program you what to do regardless of the radio channels if this happens?

▲HC: I once talked to the members about Super Junior members being the DJ and the guest for each other’s radios if there DJ changing day happens. Like on 8PM I’ll be the DJ and LT and EH can be the guest, and 10PM I’ll be the guest for ‘Sukira’ when LT and EH DJ. And for SD’s radio other members go as guests. But it’s probably impossible because of time limit. (laughs)

Any listener you remember in particular?

▲EH: For ‘Sukira’ two couples were created amongst the listeners. Some people say they now have a child because they proposed through radio.

▲ LT: The one I remember was on last April Fool’s day. It was where the students asked the Math teacher, “Teacher, please pull down the pants,” so the teacher was embarrassed. But then the students hanged a pair of pants on a blackboard, so that’s what they were talking about. And then later the students asked him to “get the pepper (in Korean, pronunciation same as .. *cough cough* men’s.. yea. ) out of the pants” which made the teacher more embarrassed, but the students had actually put red pepper inside the teacher’s pockets. I sweat a lot reading it. When the DJ comments about something that’s sexual, you have to be extra careful as it could be caught by the broadcasting council… (smiles)

▲SD: I’m reminded of a couple right before they leave for their honeymoon. At that time, we did a live interview because they told us they were going by our station and we told them to come up. We also helped a lot of people become couples.

Do you have any plan to change ‘ Sukira’ ending concept? Some listeners say the ending kiss is getting old now.

▲LT: I wish to stay with it as it’s the distinct color of the program. Sometimes, it’s embarrassing. But there are listeners who only listen to our radio for it, so.. (smiles)

And DJ sunbaes you keep as role models?

▲ LT: That would be Lee GeumHi sunbaenim. I imitated her a few times. She really attracts people. Even when I’m driving, I focus on her voice to know “what she’s talking about.” She has a nice voice and her way of introducing songs are unique, so it’s fresh.

▲SD: I respect Choi YangRak sunbaenim. The sentence he keeps using, “whatever whenever” is really amazing. It’s a bets statement that gets you to the next thing you have to do. Once I used “it’ really nice” as my ‘leading statement’ but it was really hard to say “it’s really good” after a sad story.

What kind of DJ do you want to be? Any dreams as a DJ?

▲EH: I am still young, so I wish to lead a fun program like “Cul-Two Show.” But later when I’m old, I want to a program like “Bae ChulSoo’s Music Camp” to introduce music.

▲LT: I want to continue on being a DJ before I go to the army and even after that. I’ve listened to radio ever since grade 2, so it’s part of my life. Actually I have a little bit of depression, so I want to try out a program in the early mornings so I can DJ to my liking.

▲ SD: Even if I can’t do GOLD (MBC radio for 20 years) I really want to get the BRONZE MOUSE (10 years).

▲HC: I want to be a DJ that simply is defined as “something only Kim HeeChul can do.” A DJ who doesn’t cross the line but have personality and is able to say anything I want to say. That’s my philosophy for DJ.

The agility of the two men, as they run from one side of the rehearsal room to the other, is amazing. One second they’re carrying swords and doing martial arts, and then before you know it they’re holding hands with their female co-stars and singing. As they socialize with the ensemble in a market scene, the director meticulously takes notes on the movement of the actors. He doesn’t hear the press agent say “It’s a really scary practice”. Like students about to take an exam, the two men are showing off everything they have as they run around the practice room. This is the second interview with Yesung and Sungmin, who lack experience but are passionate and vivacious, and are returning in their musical story, Hong Gil Dong.

“Idol singers always get the lead role because they’re idols, right? I wanted to break this preconception.”

Lately amongst preparations for their 4th album, musical rehearsals, and their Super Junior colleagues’ difficulties, their hearts and minds haven’t been at peace. This is the most crucial moment for Super Junior since the pop group was formed. However, there is one reason why Yesung and Sungmin are able to completely concentrate on the musical ‘Hong Gil Dong,’ their second musical.

Sungmin: “Because this is my second stage I have to do well. If people who came to see my first show, Akilla, come to this show, I have to show them an appearance even better than they expect. To be honest, when I was preparing for Akilla, my schedule was much heavier. Therefore I wasn’t able to do this kind of intense practice. When I came to the rehearsal room, I had to try to absorb a lot of things.”

Yesung: “There are people who think that “this is only their second stage so how well can they do?” but for Sungmin and me it seems like it’s our second time so a lot of things have changed. When I did Namhansanseong, I didn’t really have a clue, and I was always busy trying to keep up with my sunbaes*. Lately I’ve had to make decisions on my own, and had to become independent.”

Last year both Yesung and Sungmin underwent harsh initiation, Yesung in Namhansanseong and Sungmin in Akilla. Despite the guarantee of idol ticket power in the musical market, Yesung and Sungmin have had to compete with actors of talent and years of experience, and through constant effort have managed to grab the opportunity to appear in their second show.

Yesung: “There is a prejudice against idols who attempt to break into musicals which says that ‘You only get the lead part because you’re an idol singer.’ At the time of Namhansanseong, I received my first casting proposal for the role of the young lead character Oh Dal Jeh. At that time, I thought I would get the role of Jeong Myeong Soo instead of Oh Dal Jeh because I wanted to break the conception that ‘Idol singers always get the lead role because they’re idols.’

I hope that now that I’ve become a musical actor in my second show, even if people still think I’m lacking, they won’t think it’s because I’m an idol star. I’d like them to see me just as a musical actor with lots of potential. There were a lot of things I didn’t know when I started on Namhansanseong, but I learnt a lot from Director Cho Gwanghwa, Lee Jeongyeol, and Bae Haeseon sunbaenim, and it became a type of genre that I want to do for a long time. When I come on stage, I don’t want to be thought of as Super Junior, but as a musical actor.

I’ve had a lot of experience on stage, but being on stage for musicals is very different.”

Sungmin: “I’m the same as hyung, when I was working on my first musical, I went through a lot of hardship. In Akilla, I didn’t have a lot of lines other than ‘Akilla!’, but I had to show the inner workings of my character. I went through a lot of hardship and it was very tiring, but I really liked the work. I was really proud of being in Akilla, and I’ll always have fond memories of it.”

Yesung and Sungmin, who both started appearing in musicals around the same time, share a closer bond with each other than their other Super Junior members because of their shared musical interests. They have both developed a passion for musicals, Yesung through his “Late-bloomer Musical Mania”, and Sungmin through “Musical Mania Since Birth”.

Sungmin: “My parents were very interested in musicals. Every since I was very young, I’d go to performances together with my parents; I still remember seeing ‘Sound of Music’. At the time, I didn’t know about the musical genre, but I enjoyed it immensely.”

Yesung: “Since we debuted as Super Junior, I haven’t had any time to think of other genres. I thought ‘Even though I want to try doing a performance, I want to continue singing’, but then I saw Xanadu for the first time, which starred fellow Super Junior members. That was the first musical I ever saw. After that, I consistently prepared, and appeared in Namhansanseong last year. When I was working on Namhansanseong, I was really scared to even set foot in the rehearsal room. Lee Jeongyeol sunbae and Bae Haeseon sunbae would always work with me and teach me everything bit by bit. Thanks to those two, who recognized me as a musical hoobae**, I could have pride in appearing as a musical actor. While I’m preparing for Hong Gil Dong, I reflect on the strength that I had at that time, in my first musical.”

Hong Gil Dong, Second Stage

With the opening of their musical only a few days away, you can see Yesung and Sungmin in costume on posters, buses, and billboards. It’s their second musical, Hong Gil Dong, and they will be performing along with Yeowoon and Cho Beomjoon.

Yesung: “I finished Namhansanseong, and when I was worrying about what production I’d do next, Hong Gil Dong appeared in front of my eyes. Hasn’t everyone at least once thought of being a hero? Hong Gil Dong isn’t an unbeaten hero, we’re drawn to him because he was an important figure that lived before 500 AD. The opportunity to bring to life a person from our country’s history is amazing. That’s the feeling I get when playing Hong Gil Dong.”

Sungmin: “Hong Gil Dong that appears in this musical isn’t a hero with no rivals. Instead he’s damaged, love has made him sad, he’s lonely and humane. Previously in Akilla, I didn’t really have a lot of lines other than ‘Akilla’, but in this one the number of lines has increased several times [laughter] so it’s difficult but I can portray a lot of different emotions so I’m glad.”

The two are two years apart. The elder Yesung has cautiously entered into Hong Gil Dong through cautious steps, while Sungmin is soaking up Hong Gil Dong through much more energetic, strong strides. Yesung, who has an abundance of sensitivity, shines best in emotional and mournful tearjerking scenes, while energetic Sungmin’s personality is best fitted for showy martial arts scenes.

Sungmin: “Since I was young I liked exercising, so it seems like I pick it up faster than other people. In the musical Hong Gil Dong, people who’ve specialized in taekwondo appear. When you see the show, you’ll be able to see a lot of stunt action and taekwondo tricks.”

Yesung: “There is a scene where Hong Gil Dong and the actress Bae Soojin hold hands and sing a song. Expressing the emotion of really falling in love with a person is harder than you would think [laughter]. When we practice that scene, I always watch Yeowoon and Beomjoon Hyung, who are also cast as Hong Gil Dong, with my eyes wide.”

Hong Gil Dong is expressed in a single name but Yesung and Sungmin have showed off their own charms steadily as Hong Gil Dong, portraying two different shades of the character.

Sungmin: “This is because the personalities of myself and Yesung hyung are the complete opposite. They’re different so it’s more interesting. Hyung’s portrayal of Hong Gil Dong is cold hearted and charismatic. He’s sensitive to the loneliness but he doesn’t show it on the outside. Yesung hyung’s performance of Hong Gil Dong is addictive, I’m sure I’ll go see his shows often.”

Yesung: “Sungmin’s portrayal of Hong Gil Dong is a feisty appearance. It has a uniquely comfortable and soft feeling to it. Most of all it seems like the most charming, lively portrayal of Hong Gil Dong.”

I asked them a question about whether there wasn’t a rivalry between them, since they’re playing the same role with different colours.

Yesung: “We’re really not conscious of any rivalry. We’re on the same team, so we can help each other. We can even practice together in the dorms; we’re the same Hong Gil Dong but when I watch Sungmin I get the feeling that we’re portraying the character differently. Doing things together with Sungmin relieves stress and makes it fun.”

The two who live together in their dorm descended into the world of Hong Gil Dong, practising their lines together, exchanging morning greetings, and singing musical numbers while riding in the car. As the affection and emotional support from other Super Junior members and their family members grows – for example, Yesung’s mother watched his musical more than 10 times out of the total 13 performances – the dreams these two have about musicals have become larger.

Yesung: “Currently my biggest dream is to successfully wrap up Hong Gil Dong. When I saw the musical ‘Notredame de Paris’, I become captivated by “Sung-through” musicals***. If I was cast as Quasimodo, I wouldn’t put on the makeup and would just appear on stage! [laughter] One day I’d like to be in ‘Notredame de Paris’ or ‘Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’.”

Sungmin: “I’m currently majoring in Film and Musicals at Myongji University, and learning a lot of things at school. It’s really good that my professors are also musical actors. After this I really want to act on a big stage, I want to gain a lot of experience. I have a lot of goals about musicals, but right now my biggest dream is to do well in my current roles, that’s my goal.”

The two have received many compliments from those with interests in musicals about their well mannered and hard working nature. The second stage of these two honest and hard-working young men has begun.
