Due to the fact that they grew up in Korea, a world leader in internet, there are people in the entertainment industry whose gaming skills are above average. Super Junior’s Kyuhyun and NRG’s Noh Yoomin are such examples. There are many celebrities who relieve stress from their busy schedule by playing online games which have no time or space restrictions.

Kyuhyun, who is great at playing Starcraft is estimated to be in the same level as that of a professional gamer. His skills have been recognized by professional gamer Seo Kyungjong. Kyuhyun was called “the son of mom’s friend” for having being ranked number one in his high school class as well as having superb gaming skills.

*The son of mom’s friend refers to males who are good at everything.

Asia’s most popular group Super Junior celebrates 5th anniversary of their debut.

They first appeared on November 6th 2005 through SBS Inkigayo. Since then, they have become Asia’s super star through various activities. Super Junior will hold their 5th year anniversary party in Korea College, Seoul on the 6th. Let’s take a look at the activities they had for the past 5 years.

▶Multi-talented entertainer group’s ‘separately and together’ strategy

Super Junior is made of multi-talented members who work in various areas as actors, MCs, DJs, gagmans, composers and models in addition to working as singers. Since the debut, they had a catch phrase ‘separately and together’ and performed various activities. Many were suspicious of this strategy. But now, it has become a trend.

Siwon, Heechul, Kibum and Donghae are working as actors, while Leeteuk, Eunhyuk and Shindong are working as radio DJs and are appearing various variety shows. Kyuhyun, Yesung, Sungmin and Ryeowook are actively participating in musicals and OSTs.

▶First to introduce unit system

Super Junior is a pioneer in introducing unit system to Korean music industry. Along with their ‘separately and together’ activities, unit system was also unfamiliar. However, it has now become aground breaking system that other singers have also tried this system.

Starting with the ballad unit, Super Junior-K.R.Y. made up of Kyuhyun, Ryeowook and Yesung who have great singing abilities, there was also Super Junior-T who was the first showcase trot as idols. Super Junior-M worked in China and achieved grand slam at Chinese award shows. Lastly, Super Junior-Happy showcased bright and fun music. The group transformed itself through various genres and performances that their diverse music and charms received recognition.

▶Breaking records in Asia

Super Junior is receiving overwhelming interests from all of Asia.

Also, the fourth album Miinah released this year is expected to have their highest CD sales. The album has been ranked number one for 22 weeks on KKBOX.

Moreover, Super Show 2 which was held in 9 cities in Asia for a total of 15 shows had cumulative audience of 2,000,000. Their third Asia tour, Super Show 3 will be held in 13 cities in Asia for a total of 16 shows.

h”Is it the best acquaintance in my life? It feels like it’s the one time I’ve met good people.”

This is the answer that was received when Shindong was asked what Super Junior meant to him. “Clenching my fists and following the difficult flow of life, the Super Junior members were the strong wall that was supporting me.” After debuting for 6 years, they have become one of Asia’s top idol groups.

Before and after meeting the members of Super Junior, Shindong strongly stresses that his self-confidence took a 180 degree turn.

“It was like I was a kid that didn’t know how to do anything, and after I became a member of Super Junior, the climax of my life came. From that time onwards, life started to rise up like a platform. That meaning, you could say that it was the best acquaintance in my life? It feels like it’s the one time that I’ve met good people.”

Of course, if life before having a goal wasn’t this hard, that would definitely be a lie. In reality, they are all very worried about the state of their Chinese member Hangeng.

“It’s not like I’m not satisfied, there’s no way that I can’t be. But the company is also very worried about us, and the fact that we are doing so well right now, we want it to last longer. Some say that an idol’s life span is only 5 years long, but in order to prove that wrong, the members often discuss together and work hard to do our best. We want everyone to see a different side of us.”

He stressed once again that ‘If someone gets famous, they will change, but in life Super Junior is the best.’ and ‘I don’t want to give up.’

Through the episode of ‘Dr. Champ’ that will air on the 27th, there could lie the reason of Super Junior’s strength.

“Before that there was also another drama, but I want to do better this time. Because I want to show a better side of me to the members, that’s the only reason why I’m so nervous, right? Or maybe acting is just that hard (hahaha). Lines that are like everyday words are even harder, and when I say my first line, because I’m very nervous, I won’t even know if I’m bitten by a mosquito.”

Appearing as a taekwondo practitioner and filming for the first time high up in the mountains, he was ‘super’ nervous. But that also produced ‘higher’ expectations.

“I only realized after I performed that I wanted to get through that work, and that I had to dig up more of my talents, which caused such a high expectation. Even though I don’t get much airtime, but through this chance I can see a me that is getting better and better, and to this type of change, I am very thankful.”

Super Junior has been discussing about other teams that are seen as their ‘rivals’. ‘The best acquaintance of his life’, Shindong still thinks that it’s like that, and in order to let the members see a better side of himself, there is internal conflict between the members.

“As long as we have a strong foundation, we will grow more. It basically feels like I’ve stepped into the world of acting, but I won’t forget that this heart belongs to Super Junior.”

Super Junior member Leeteuk has revealed a little story regarding his stage name.

Leeteuk has appeared on the SBS Chuseok Special “Star Real Video” on the 21st, on the show he revealed “My initial stage name was not Leeteuk”.

He said “My initial stage name was Kangsu. Just like the meaning behind the name Kangta was ‘The slugger* of the music industry’, the meaning behind the name Junjin was ‘The advancer of the music industry’, the meaning behind the name Hyesung was ‘The comet of the music industry’, etc.”, “Lee Soo Man representative said that now ‘You have to become the strong competitor of the music industry’ which was the meaning of the name that he has initially given me, Kangsu.

Leeteuk said “I wanted a more concise name, thus I went to apply to change for another name. After a few days, I had a second stage name ‘Shin Lee’. When I asked for the meaning behind that name, he answered ‘a certain deity who has came down to the earth’. I felt that it was too womanlike thus I went to apply to change my name again and I was finally given the name Leeteuk. Lee Soo Man representative said that the meaning behind that name was ‘You are a special guy’”. Leeteuk’s words have made everyone around him to burst out into laughter.

Guests who had appeared on this week’s show includes Park Hyunbin, Jung Juri, Sungmin, Luna, Key, Hwang Kwanghee, etc.

On MBC TV Chuseok Special Episode “Radio Star Super Show”, aired Sept 23th, Super Junior members mentioned their thoughts about Kangin and Hankyung.

The MCs carefully mentioned the incident that involved Kangin who is now in the military service. They asked, “What about Kangin’s position in Super Junior now that he’s on military service?”

Leeteuk confessed, “When the case first erupted, we tried so hard to wrap it. People would be thinking, ‘If we wouldn’t, then who would?’. But again, exactly one month, another incident blew up, we felt our heart was turned down.”

“The frustration and betrayal couldn’t help but rise up. But as the time passed, we kept thinking that we’re the one that should protect him. Adults are always talking about ‘time heals the wounds’, it seems appropriate with our situation.” Leeteuk said

Also mentioned was Hankyung who wants to terminate his exclusive contract with SM. The members said that, “We miss Hankyung. Right now, we can’t contact him.”

MC Yoon Jongshin asked, “Was there any sign that this would happened?”.

Shindong answered, “To be honest, I want to say something…”

“The news spread in China was ‘the members didn’t take care of him well’. To be honest, it’s wrong. We went to play together, went to drink together.” said Shindong who seem sad.

Leeteuk said, “If I knew that it’d be so hard on him, I wish he could’ve consulted with the members so we’d understand what the problem is. All of us didn’t know his situation.”

Eunhyuk said, “Right now, we miss him so much.”. Leeteuk said, “We leave Hankyung’s place empty. I still have time before the military service; I hope before the time comes, we can stand on stage together as 13.”

Around the turn of the millennium, Korean pop culture and entertainment started popping up everywhere in Asia. Korean Cinema saw a new renaissance with the domestic and regional popularity of movies like My Sassy Girl, Friend, and My Wife is a Gangster. The music industry ushered in a new generation of teen idols whose fame extended beyond Korea. Most significantly, Korean dramas invaded televisions across Asia, with series like Winter Sonata and Dae Jang Geum reaching an unprecedented level of Pan-Asian popularity. The fervor for Korean dramas and Korean television stars like Bae Yong Joon, Choi Ji Woo, and Lee Young Ae was so great, the phenomenon was dubbed the Korean Wave. Fast forward to 2010, Korean entertainment is still spreading its sphere of influence in Asia and beyond, but the focus is shifting away from Korean dramas. There’s a new wave sweeping out of Korea, and this wave is led by K-pop.

The K-pop wave isn’t content with just niche markets, dubbed soap operas, and Japanese fan meetings, not when domestic album sales are flagging and there’s a world out there for the taking. We’re now in a time when Rain can star in a Hollywood movie, Dong Bang Shin Ki can top the Oricon charts, Wonder Girls can tour with the Jonas Brothers, and Nobody and Sorry Sorry can be heard from every karaoke box in Asia. K-pop is more popular than ever in Asia, and thanks to the Internet and the proliferation of online social media, it’s also traveled farther outside of Asia and inspired dedicated fanbases in every region imaginable. Standing at the forefront of this K-pop wave is entertainment juggernaut SM Entertainment.
Founded in 1995 by former singer Lee Soo Man, SM Entertainment has produced some of the biggest K-pop stars of the past decade including H.O.T, S.E.S, BoA, Shinhwa, Dong Bang Shin Ki, Super Junior, and Girls’ Generation. Though K-pop’s other two giants JYP Entertainment and YG Entertainment also have their own formidable lineup of stars, as a talent label SM Entertainment is clearly the biggest player in K-pop. According to year-to-date domestic sales figures reported by the Hanteo chart in mid-August, SM Entertainment artists own the top seven best-selling albums of 2010 so far. SM does everything bigger – bigger groups, bigger stars, bigger sales, bigger fandoms, bigger controversies, bigger heartbreaks – and it’s been doing it bigger and better than the rest for a while.

Super Junior, Strength in Numbers

With TVXQ splitting their time between Korea and Japan, SM introduced another group in 2005, Super Junior 05. Comprised of a whopping 12 members, the band was originally conceived as a rotating-membership unit, with plans for a different “Super Junior 06″ lineup the following year. The group’s great popularity after the release of their first album, however, prompted SM to rethink their plans. Much to the relief of fans, in 2006 Super Junior became an official group, with one more member added (the youngest, Kyu Hyun) to bring the count to 13. As K-pop’s biggest group, Super Junior vaunted to the top with the hit single U, and they’ve stayed there ever since.

Super Junior’s smorgasbord of vastly different talents and personalities opened up whole new possibilities. Like in most groups, there were some members better known for singing (Kyu Hyun, Ryeo Wook, Ye Sung), dancing (Dong Hae, Eun Hyuk, Han Geng, Shin Dong), and rapping (Ki Bum, Eun Hyuk). But Super Junior’s deep lineup also included actors (Ki Bum, Hee Chul, Si Won) and talkers who quickly emerged as new-generation emcees (Lee Teuk, Kang In, Hee Chul, Shin Dong). The group’s hosting and variety show prowess, in particular, created an image different than the typical idols. Super Junior is also the first group to debut with a foreign member, Han Geng, starting a precedent that is now quite common in K-pop.
Super Junior’s strength in numbers made them a formidable force that grew with every album. The releases of Don’t Don, Sorry Sorry, and their most recent Bonamana were all big events in K-pop. Sorry Sorry, in particularly, launched the super-sized boy band to a new level of fame in Asia. Other than group and individual activities, Super Junior have also formed sub-units targeting different musical styles. K.R.Y, the first Super Junior unit introduced, is a ballad group, while Super Junior T tackles trot and Super Junior Happy makes, er, happy music.

The most significant Super Junior unit though is its Chinese spin-off, Super Junior M. With a Chinese member in the group, Super Junior has had a foot in the Chinese market since their debut. In 2008, SM made a full-fledged foray into Chinese music with the formation of Super Junior M comprised of Han Geng, Si Won, Ryeo Wook, Dong Hae, Kyu Hyun, plus two additional new members, Chinese-Canadian Henry Lau and Mainland native Zhou Mi. The addition of two non-Super Junior members into Super Junior M created a good deal of controversy among Super Junior’s famously dedicated fanbase, but the project went ahead with the members spending significant time promoting and performing in China. Most fans were won over by the time they released their first mini-album Super Girl which garnered the group a Golden Melody nomination.
Other than Super Junior M, SM also debuted Chinese female artist Zhang Li Yin in 2006. The young R&B singer’s Korean single Timeless won her the Best New Solo Artist award at the M.net Asian Music Awards, a first for a foreign artist. After making her mark in Korea, she released her first Chinese album I Will two years later.

August 4, 2010. Many Korean bands debut each year, and if you analyse how each of these idol groups achieved success, you will realise that there is actually a structure (like a perfect combination): With the group leader’s blood type being A, the group would be the most charismatic and stable; In a group, the youngest must be likeable; If their fans don’t have a representive name and colour, it means that the colour is not “fashion”.

Popular Idol Group Leader’s rule: Leaders are mostly Blood Type A

With the ‘war’ between korean boybands, in order to let each member show their own talents, the ‘leader’ has to be there. FT Island’s Choi Jung Hun, CNBlue’s Jung Yong Hwa, ZE:A’s Moon Jun Yeong, Super Junior’s Lee Teuk, DBSK’s Jung YunHo (UKnow), 2PM’s ex-leader Jaebum, 2AM’s Jo Kwon, Big Bang’s G-Dragon and B2ST’s Yoon Du Jun, the common point between these 9 leaders are that they are all of Blood Type A, and are all responsible, follow rules and like to service others. WIth groups having such sweet leaders, it is like they have something to lean on, and the leaders lead the group towards a goal.

Popular Idol Group Maknae’s (youngest) rule: Maknae must be cute; increase popularity

In Korea, respecting those who are older than you is very important. In korea’s boybands, there is also a special ‘Maknae’ culture: Like SS501′s Kim Hyung Joon, FT Island’s Choi Min Hwan***, Big Bang’s Seungri etc, because they are the youngest members, they are often teased, but their image is often cute and is loved by the audience. A manager of an idol group said, “when choosing the maknae member, other than that she/he must be talented, the most important factor is their skin and their looks, we wil try to choose those with milky skin and who have baby face.” In a group, the maknae is often the one who has to help his brothers/sisters, for example 2PM’s dorm, although they have a helper to clean their dorm, the one who has to throw the rubbish and clean up the dining table after a meal is always the youngest member, Chansung. Beast’s maknae, Song Dong Woon, is the one who creates the atmosphere in their dorm, and when his hyungs are feeling down, he will cheer them up.

Since 2000, the leaders have been used to increase the group’s popularity; but now, its the youngest members. U-Kiss’s Dongho is an example. Dongho rose to fame through a KBS2 TV program, and managed to show everyone what U-Kiss was made up of. T-ara’s maknae Jiyoon also increased T-ara’s poularity through acting in KBS2′s “God of Study”. The most miraculous thing is, when creating an idol group, the youngest member is usually the last to be chosen. This was the case for 4Minute’s Kwon So Hyung and Beast’s Song Dong Woon.

4Minute’s management company said, “Staying with members, the youngest member must have a lot of patience.” and also, “Although they do not talk much usually, but when needed, a powerful sentence from them might decide the result.

“Popular Idol Group Member’s Rule: There must be one with “Princess’ illness” and “Alien”

In an idol group, there is often one funny idol who likes to admire herself/himself (“Princess Illness”)in the mirror. Like Shinhwa’s ,Shin Hye SUng and Kim Dong Wan, DBSK’s Hero Jaejoong, SS501′s Park Jung Min, Super Junior’s Kim Hee Chul. Kim Heechul calls himself ‘cinderella’ and his fans also call him “Princess”. His image is more extravagant than women, with red hair, golden hair, silver hair, long ponytail, pink jacket, rainbow shawls, Roger Rabbit’s large T pyjamas, pink school bags; his members said “he likes to show his collarbone more than women do”, “Because he is worried that it is not good for his skin, he doesn’t even drink carbonate drinks”. They also praised him –”his nickname is Cindrella, he is the little red spot in SJ, which is green.” Park Jung Min is even worse, he locked himself in the toilet once, and faced the mirror touching his face saying “this is so pretty, i really want to hang you up on the wall.”, and when he is praised for his looks, he says “i was born like that.” He also often gives himself names like “Park Charisma”, “Sexy Park” etc.As fir ‘Aliens’, there are ShinHwa’s Eric, DBSK’s Hero Jaejoong, SS501′s Kim Hyun Joong, Super Junior’s Kim Heechul, Big Bang’s T.O.P, 2PM’s Park Jaebum, 2AM’s Jo Kwon, they are called 4-dimensional, and tend to jump up with actions upon hearing certain words. Their actions often leave people wondering “Huh?” but at the same time finding it interesting, like Kim Hyun Joong’s first kiss scene, he asked the director, “Director..do i have to put my tongue in?” When asked who in “Boys over Flowers” is the most handsome, he would say “the colour of my hair is the most handsome” and weird answers like that. Idol groups with members with “princess illness” and “aliens” allow the group and members to have many things to talk about and laugh about, they are also well-loved, and are the ones in the group who lighten the atmosphere. Also, many idol groups have members who have animals as their nicknames, for example Shinhwa’s Eric is rabbit, Lee Min Woo is cat, Shin Hye Sung is fox; Click-B’s Oh Jong Hyuk is rabbit; DBSK’s Junsu is dolphin; SS501′s Heo Young Saeng is beaver, Park Jung Min is horse; Super Junior’s Kangin is racoon, Eunhyuk is monkey, Sungmin is rabbit and Lee Donghae is fish.

Popular Idol Group Fans’ rule: Each group has a representative colour

Every idol group has its representive colour, and they have special names for their fans. Super Junior’s representative colour is Pearl Sapphire Blue, and they call their fans “E.L.F” (Ever Lasting Friends) “ELF” is also used to refer to elves, so their fans are also called “elves” (more relevant for chinese fans) SS501′s representative colour is green, so when their fans hold the green balloons, they look like peas, and thus SS501 calls their fans “Pea Princesses”. Their management company also produced pea cups, pea earrings etc. FT Island’s representative colour is yellow, and their fans are called “Primadonna” (‘Female lead’ in Italian), otherwise known as “Pri”.Korea’s idol market has a very special ‘balloon culture’, as it is convenient to bring balloons around and they become big when air is blown in. This way, it is easy for singers to know where their fans are, and thus would interact with his/her fans more.

***Not sure why they say Choi Min Hwan is the maknae of FT Island, the maknae of FT Island is Song Seunghyun.

“The Beauty of Four Seconds.”

This is the snarky label from the Internet for Heechul, member of an idol group Super Junior who only has four seconds of solo singing time in “Sorry Sorry,” the title song for the group’s third album. Together, there are 13 members of Super Junior who sang this song. Since all 13 divide up a single song, each member can call himself a “singer” after singing for only four seconds.

Lately there are increasing cases in which solo parts of a song last no more than a few seconds, as the number of members in the idol groups such as Super Junior, Girl’s Generation and After School increase. This is contributing to the pop culture in which those who rely on looks or conversation skills are considered “singers” regardless of their singing abilities.

Idol Group Members Sing 16 Seconds on Average

According to Dong-A Ilbo’s measurements of solo parts, seven idol groups (Girls’ Generation, Super Junior, 4minute, After School, Infinite, MBLAQ, f(x)) appearing on MBC’s “Show Music Core” (July 10), SBS’s “Inkigayo” (July 11) and KBS’s “Music Bank” (June 25), sang for 16 seconds per person on average. Because a song lasts around 3.5 minutes on average, each member of those group sang less than one-tenth of a song, excluding the chorus.

Among the groups, Girl’s Generation (singing “Oh!”) had the shortest solo parts, averaging 9.4 seconds per part. The main vocal Taeyeon sang for 22 seconds, while Seohyeon’s solo parts — two lines consisting of “oppa look at me, just look at me” and “listen, really” — amounted to 5 seconds. When After School sang “Bang!”, members Nana and Lizzy had no solo parts; instead, the two sang together for 8 seconds. Jooyeon’s solo part — “The heart-thumping night, my heart is oh oh oh oh” — lasted 4 seconds.

Infinite, singing “Come Back Again,” had the greatest time differential among the members’ solo parts. While the main vocal Kim Sunggyu sang for 29 seconds, Lee Sung-Jong, Lee Seung-Yeol and L sang for 1, 3 and 4 seconds respectively. The words that Lee Sung-Jong sang alone were four letters (다 거짓말 “all lies”). Lee Seung-Yeol only had the line, “Feels like I’m going to die, my head hurts.” Lee Young-Joon, director of Infinite’s management company, said: “It is not that the members have different singing abilities. It is more the case that the process of assigning the solo parts while taking the tone of this particular song into consideration made the parts of certain members relatively smaller.”

As individual singing is increasingly obscured through the lengthened chorus and the shortened solo parts, certain bloggers have taken to uploading videos of live performances with pre-recorded background music edited out, then proceeding to evaluate the singers.

No Shame in No Singing

Yoona of Girls’ Generation, in “Family Outing 2″ aired on SBS on June 27, said: “We can’t go longer than ten seconds (on solo parts),” and that her part is five letters. (말하고 싶어 “I want to say.”)

Since his debut, Heechul cumulatively sang 39 seconds of all Super Junior title songs; Yoona of Girls’ Generation, 42 seconds; and Nicole of Kara, 45 seconds. Instead of being embarrassed, they appear to treat this as a fodder for laughter. In MBC’s “Radio Star” aired on June 30, Jung-ah, member of After School, was a recipient of a joke from MC Kim Guk-Jin that she was “amazingly, a main vocal.” Jung-ah only responded by laughing and half-heartedly singing one line of a song. Goo Hara of Kara, whom music fans have pointed out for lacking singing ability, invited further criticism by only repeating the refrain “hallo hallo hallo” in Kara’s new song “Lupin,” released February of this year.

Music critic Im Jin-Mo said, “If there is only a few seconds of solo parts, a singer will naturally practice less singing — which is what singers are supposed to do,” and noted, “Another problem is that members with less solo parts will feel excluded, which hurts the teamwork of the group, shortening the group’s lifecycle.” Music critic Kim Jak-Ga said, “The more idol groups — who do not put much emphasis on singing — there are in the pop world, there is less room for singers with real talent.”

From drama, variety, movies, radio to public performances, the opportunities that idols see these days have increased. It has become an age where idols have to explore other areas and not just stay in one to show off their charms. And these idols will need to spend their energy in the various areas they are exploring into.
The phrase ‘one source multi use’ is just the right one to use on idols. Even though they debuted as singers, they don’t show just the features of a singer. If the stage is not ‘wide’ enough for one, one move on to look at drama, movie, theatre and musicals etc, to show more of one’s charms and talents one cannot show in just the short duration of 3 minutes on stage. In the midst of achieving that, these idols will need the strength of that of an ‘iron man’. Even though this is a chance for the singers to up their rich and fame, without the energy to do so is also useless.

Of the idols, Super Junior has many unique group activities – Super Junior K.R.Y, Super Junior T, Super Junior M, Super Junior Happy. Members Choi SiWon is also exploring into other areas like drama and movie.
Another example is girlgroup So Nyeo Shi Dae with the members doing various other solo activities, they also had unique group ‘Room mate’ consisting of members Jessica, Tiffany and SeoHyun. Member YoonA is also seen doing various drama appearances, showing various features through those appearances.
Group KARA member Goo Hara, who joined the group later, is enjoying increasing popularity through her appearance on KBS Invincible Youth previously. And GyuRi is also showing a different charming side of her through her DJ activities on MBC radio ‘ShinDong GyuRi‘s ShimShimTaPa’. SHINee member Onew has also recently taken up the challenge of musical acting.
This is one of the strategies that agencies adopt for their idols. Idols showing various charms is one of the ways to money and wealth creation for the agencies. But under the directing of their agencies, the energy of these idols will obviously run out one day. Even though we cannot say that all idols promote in such manner, but there are a considerable number of them promoting under such strategies by their agencies.
But if these idols are to take a moment to rest, they will quickly be forgotten by the masses. A music critic commented, “Nowadays, we call the way the singers promote without much rest as ‘lightning attack’. Not even talking about 1 year, even if they are to rest for a few months, they will be forgotten quickly. And to maintain their popularity, these people have to show themselves constantly on TV in various forms. Also, because of that, singers also don’t release full length album but minialbums more often as they will mean using up lesser time and costs.”
In order to keep up to speed of changing tastes of the masses and media, and as contracted under agencies, these idols are only moving in the directions told to them.
