{NEWS} Superband and Super Junior-M’s nominations stir controversy

They might not have much in common other than being “Super”, but the Golden Melody Awards nominations for Superband and Super Junior-M have sure caused some controversies.

Super Junior-M released their Chinese mini album last year to further expand their Asian market. Although the Mandarin pronunciations from some of their Korean members might be questionable, fans didn’t mind and flocked to buy their album anyways. Unfortunately, soon after their nomination for Best Singing Group was announced, netizens were already questioning why they were nominated despite their shaky Mandarin. Other netizens came to their defense and stressed that they were in fact singing in Chinese.

Superduper Superband was also criticized by netizens on their nomination for Best Band. The band was formed in 2008 with veteran superstars Lo Da-Yu (55), Jonathan Lee (51), Emil Chau (49) and Chang Chen-Yue (36). They have performed over 40 shows in the past two years and is estimated to have made 4.3 billion (NTD). The band announced that they will breakup after racking up enough retirement savings their concert tour. Some netizens questioned the choice nominating a “Limited-time only” band.

Regardless of anyone’s opinion, Superband will take home at least one Golden Melody award on June 26th – They will be given a special judging committee award for their contributions to the music industry.

Shaky Mandarin? Pfft, I’m a native Chinese speaker and I think their pronunciation is good enough for someone who doesn’t use the language much. -_-

well i really can’t say anything and will leave the native mandarin speakers to judge. but i think the whole performance matters too and what they may lack in solid mandarin skills they make up for in othe areas like in dancing. sigh. but what do i know.

i wish those people questioning think the way as you do…
anyway, all the best for SJM! hope they win the award! hwaiting!

oh please, their Mandarin pronunciation is better than mine and I’m Chinese! Some of these netizens need to take a chill pill ;)

    5. Evangeline commented on May 15, 2010 at 03:08 PM

I think their pronunciation really improved a lot compared to the first album. Kyu’s pronunciation is FLAWLESS. Those Taiwanese netizens should try speaking Korean and see if they can do it.

yeah… despite of the language barrier, i think Super Girl is definitely a HIT.. and their singing skills are way too good. that’s why SJM is on the lists of BEST SINGING GROUPS. why don’t netizens just accept it? forget the language barrier thing!! in fact, it’s really hard to learn foreign languages

They’re KOREAN. Them learning Chinese is hard enough. Plus the songs were just too catchy!

Super Junior is a South Korean boy band under SM Entertainment who has been a leading star in the Korean music scene. One year following their debut with 12 members in 2005, one additional member was introduced to complete the group and have since formed 4 sub-groups. Each of the members are known for their unique talents and charms in entertaining the audiences, be it as singer, actor, MC, radio host, rapper, comedian, songwriter, model or dancer. They are the second singing group to win "Favorite Artist of Korea" at the 2008 MTV Asia Awards.

To date, SUJU has released five studio albums, with numerous singles, digital, singles, soundtracks and live concert albums. Their third album, Sorry Sorry, released in 2009, is arguably the most critically and commercially successful album to date, selling 30,000 copies on its release day in Korea only, nabbing the #1 chart position in Korea, Taiwan, Philippines and Thailand. With only 9 active members since 2011, the group continues to receive a tremendous popularity in Europe, America and Asia, earning them the title of King of Global Korean Wave.

    • Why I love Super Junior? I wasn’t into K-Pop when Super Junior debuted, I started noticing them only after they released Sorry Sorry (in my opinion, THE song that shot them to superstardom and got them where they are right now). My first impression of them was “Why so many members?” and “What’s with the haircut?” While watching EHB, it was then when I realized that these boys began to grow on me. They have a nonchalant approach to fame and they don’t take themselves too seriously, that’s a quality I rarely find in other K-Pop groups. I realize in Korean entertainment world, idol images are shaped and they have to maintain that, but every so often, with SJ members, their real personalities appear in interviews, variety shows, radio broadcasts and especially Super Show. They way they interact with each other make me feel like I’m watching the boys-next-door, approachable, funny, dorky and humble. I guess that imperfection shows that they are real and relatable.

Why I love TwELFs and SPL? When I first started collecting information about Super Junior, I stumbled upon several fanbases, but TwELFs stood out to my attention immediately for several reasons: quality content, good English, pleasing to the eyes & easy to navigate.Like any other new converts, I joined in the fandom bandwagon and participated with gusto especially on Trending Topic projects. I was surprised to know that TwELFs founders were still in college, because they ran a tight ship with the blog and Twitter account. I was even more pleasantly surprised when I communicated via Twitter with the founders, because they were so friendly and unpretentious. TwELFs blog has meaty content without sacrificing entertainment value. It is informational without sounding too serious and at the same time, provides all the fun tidbits for fans –newly minted or veteran.

SPL is oozing with creativity (e.g. forum members referred to as Students and Super Junior members as Professors!) and over a short period of time has gained the reputation of being one of the most acclaimed international forums for ELFs. SPL keeps making changes for the better and continues to carry out credible projects for Super Junior and ELFs. SPL is a labor of love, and I salute the people behind it, who are such dedicated hard-workers.
